Art therapy is a dynamic and sensitive form of psychotherapy that speaks straight to the source of our human experience. The arts allow us to access our lived stories in a gentle and honest way, externalizing our inner worlds within the safety of the marks made. The arts enable us to reveal, explore, understand and accept our stories with meaningful clarity and creative precision. In turn, promoting a heightened sense of self awareness, wellbeing and optimum opportunity for positive change.
I am constantly amazed in how the arts are able to provide people of all ages and from many different backgrounds a similar language from which to express themselves. Painting, drawing, clay work, storytelling, drama and sand play are all possible avenues that can be used to access thoughts, emotions, life narratives, values and much more. The magic of art therapy lies in the power of these techniques to take us out of heads and into our bodies where our life stories are stored and translated, and in turn explain how these stories are being played out in the present day. This process can help children, adolescents and adults with a myriad of issues including:
- Identity formation
- Emotional regulation
- Reducing stress and anxiety
- Investigating behaviours
- Building self-esteem
- Understanding relationships
- Identifying hopes and dreams
- Exploring different ways of being
- Working through trauma

I understand all of the people that I work with as the expert of their experience and that together we use art as a way to create a collaborative inquiry. The therapeutic relationship is an important factor in this process and can offer individuals a safe, empathic and honest space in which to explore and experiment. This might look like a child leading me through their understanding of family conflict in the sand tray, an adolescent bouncing off ideas of identity on me through mask making and role play, or an adult allowing me to hold them and their paintings as they work through grief. Although challenging at times, art psychotherapy can be a relaxing and fun way to get to know yourself.

Timber is my kelpie dog, she is a gentle and affectionate girl and will be present in my work to provide comfort and support.
